Codemasters picks up F1 license
British developer plans multi-format release

Racing specialist Codemasters has picked up the Formula 1 license following Sony's decision to pull-out of the deal after five years in control.

Codemasters has confirmed that its first F1 titles will be available on all formats rather than just the PlayStation 3 (a la Sony), stating that it will use the publisher's EGO Engine, as seen in Colin McRae: Dirt and the forthcoming Race Driver: GRID.

"As a world-leading creator of driving games, this alliance with Formula 1 is the jewel in Codemasters’ racing crown and creates an undisputed segment champion," Rod Cousens, CEO of Codemasters, said in a statement.

"Formula 1 has gone with the best, the segment leader. It has gone to the home of the EGO Engine for quality; it has gone to the company that can host Formula 1 Online, to the company that is streaking away from the pack."

EA working on rival to WiiFit
Moore says publisher wants to appeal to the housewife

Electronic Art's Peter Moore has claimed that the publisher is working on a rival to Nintendo's WiiFit, but one that focuses more on traditional exercises.

As reported by EuroGamer, Moore said EA would be monitoring the sales performance of WiiFit over the coming months.

"We're watching very closely what the Wii Fit board does. We think we have to have a role to play with that mum - the kids have gone to school, she's got 45 minutes on her own, the Wii is there, it's the first console she's ever liked because she can do things herself. And we're working on stuff, trying to work out how we can use EA Sports applications there," he told the site.

"We also need to make sure we're delivering something that's truly exercise. I'll call [Wii Fit] more eastern fitness, where it senses weight and balance, like Tai-Chi. It's more about holistic fitness. I don't think the board is going to take a pounding. We need to look more at western fitness in which I can actually be moving and start to sweat a little bit, and that's what we're working on right now."

New Wii channel hits console in States
Fancy some demos and trailers?

Nintendo has added a new channel to the Wii's line-up in the United States which brings game demos and trailers to the record-selling console.

As reported by CVG, the new channel also adds a game database to the system, allowing gamers to search for existing or forthcoming games on a Nintendo console and find out vital information about them.

DS demos can now be downloaded to the console directly, while it's also possible to stream interviews and trailers for upcoming releases.

The new channel is expected to make the trip across the pond on May 30th.

THQ blames Nintendo for poor performance
Rival has expanded market

THQ has blamed Nintendo's expansion of the children's videogames market for its poor performance as indicated by its financial statistics for the last quarter.

As reported by CasualGaming.biz, THQ's president Brian Farrell hit out against Nintendo in a conference call, claiming that the Japanese giant had made the market "extremely competitive", which was why THQ's "traditionally strong kids' business did not meet expectations."

"The kids' market was extremely competitive during fiscal '08. In fact, it was the most crowded market for videogames for kids in recent memory," he continued.

"With a tough Pixar comparison to Cars [Ratatouille] and new competition from Nintendo's first-party titles - as well as new music games - our traditionally strong kids' business did not meet expectations."

GTA IV could end Wii domination
Forbes makes bold prediction

No one can counter the claim that the Wii has by far and away the dominant format in this generation's console wars, but Forbes Magazine's Brian Caulfield has questioned whether the fact that the biggest game of the year - Grand Theft Auto IV - not being available on Wii might signal the beginning of the end of Nintendomination.

According to Caulfield, Grand Theft Auto IV is "one of a series of good games that will each convince consumers that there is a lot of good content on the other two boxes."

He concludes, "It's hard to imagine how the sprawling world of Grand Theft Auto IV — which already taxes the multicore processors powering the Xbox and PlayStation — could be recreated on the Wii.

"Wii won't die, for sure. But Grand Theft Auto IV may have just given a new lease on life to the PlayStation 3."
